How to install Owncloud in Plesk 11.x and CentOS 6.x
- Details
Owncloud is a web based, open source cloud storage application that allows anyone to host their own cloud service. By hosting your own service rather than using a commercial cloud service you and your clients maintain control over your data and personal information.
I'm sure there are numerous ways to install Owncloud on a server running Plesk 11 with Red Hat/CentOS 6.x but here is how I did it. The key focus of my approach is to take advantage of the Plesk infrastructure as much as possible and minimize any custom changes outside of Plesk.
Some of the advantages of this approach are:
- By staying within the Plesk environment you take advantage of Plesk's management of the environment (Apache, PHP, FastCGI, etc) while avoiding any unintended conflicts with Plesk. I've used Plesk for quite a few years and although it's more forgiving than it used to be I still find that configuration changes made outside of Plesk can cause problems, especially during updates/upgrades.
- You can use the Plesk Backup Manager to backup the Owncloud installation and restore to multiple servers making it much easier to set up Owncloud on a new server.
- The same approach can be used for Windows and Linux servers.
This procedure should work for Plesk 10 and Red Hat/Centos 5.x but I haven't tested it. It should even work for Windows servers (again, I haven't tested it).

Stop Bullying
- Details
When I heard about the suicide of Amanda Todd and the acts of bullying that led her to take her life I was shocked that something like this could happen. If you are not familliar with her story you can watch the YouTube video she posted about a month before the day of her death.
It's always sad when someone so talented dies at such a young age but it's sadder still when it's by their own hand due to the abuse and cruelty of others.
As someone who was bullied in school I know how helpless and alone it can feel. No one should have to feel that. If you are being bullied, know someone who is being bullied or even suspect someone is being bullied then GET HELP. Talk to someone you trust or call an anonymous help line but DO SOMETHING.
I've added a link to StopABully.CA on the left of my home page where you can get help or find out how you can help stop bullying.

Hummus
- Details
A healthy dip for flat bread or vegetables that is low in fat and sodium. It can also be used as a spread on sandwiches instead of butter or mayonnaise.
1 lb | dried chick peas |
1/4 tsp | baking soda |
7 1/4 cups | water |
1 1/2 tsp |
salt |
2 cloves | minced garlic |
1/3 cup | tahini |
1/3 cup | lemon juice, preferably fresh squeezed |
1/4 cup | extra virgin olive oil |
- Rinse the chick peas and put in a slow cooker along with 7 cups of the water, the baking soda and 1 tsp salt. Slow cook on low for 10 hours. Note: The baking soda and salt along with the long cooking time give the chick peas the creamy texture necessary for good hummus.
- Drain the chick peas and let cool.
- Put the chick peas into a food processor with the garlic and tahini and blend for 15-20 secs. Scrape down the bowl and blend for another 15-20 secs.
- Add 1/4 cup of water, the lemon juice and 1/2 tsp salt. Blend for 15-20 secs.
- Keep the food processor running while you very slowly drizzle 1/4 cup olive oil. It is important to drizzle the oil slowly or the oil will separate from the mixture.
- After the oil has been incorporated blend for another 30 secs.
Makes 5-6 cups.
Variations:
- Hot Sauce Hummus - Add 1/4 cup of your favourite hot sauce with the lemon juice.
- Roasted Red Pepper Hummus - Blend in 1 or two roasted red peppers before you add the olive oil.
- Jalapeno Hummus - Remove the seeds from 2 jalapeno peppers and finely chop. Add with the garlic and tahini.
